Tag Rugby Festival at Cardiff Arms Park

Willowbrook Primary School was invited to compete in the Cardiff Blues Tag

Rugby Tournament held at the Cardiff Arms Park. The team comprised Year
4, 5 and 6 children. The tournament didn’'t begin as intended. Within three
minutes of their opening game against Tredegarville they found themselves
two tries down. However, the team displayed incredible heart and desire to
come back and even the scores to two tries apiece by the end of the game.
Tredegarville were also lucky not to concede in the final stages of the
game by the intense Willowbrook attack.

Game two against Glan Morfa resulted in a loss. The score line of four
tries to two was not really a true reflection of the overall game as Glan
Morfa scored two break away tries from handling errors and ‘dodgy’ refereeing
decisions!

The team put on an incredible attacking display in their third game
winning five tries to two against Adamstown's Year 4’'s. Our inexperienced
team were beginning to identify gaps in the opposition defence, attacking
at pace and supporting one another during line breaks. This intense pressure
proved too much for their opponents, and their organised and defensive
lines were too strong! One of the best tries of the match was a real team
try, where each player displayed superb communication and support to
their teammates, and when the ball was placed over the try line it sent
the parents, Mr Greenwell and Mr Eagles into a frenzy!

Unfortunately the last game resulted in heavy defeat against Adamstown
Year 6’'s. This team were an experienced tag rugby side who
clearly had plenty of confidence, game awareness and competitive experience.
However, positives could be taken from the seven tries to one defeat. The
children were able to identify and take on board their fast paced and
organised style of play, and the experience at playing against such an
outfit will prove to be a positive lesson for future practice and games.

Overall the future of tag rugby at Willowbrook looks very bright, and I'’m
sure there will be more tournaments to come in the near future. The
children had a superb day playing at Cardiff Arms Park with the
impressive backdrop of the Millennium Stadium, and to top it all off, the
children were given the opportunity to hold the RBS 6 Nations Trophy!
Thank you parents for your kind support, I think the children did
their teachers, peers and families proud!

A Greenwell
